Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - At approximately 4:40 p.m. on April 22, 2025, a Montana Highway Patrol trooper was advised that another trooper received a phone call related to a non-injury hit-and-run crash that he was investigating. That crash had occurred on April 11, 2025. The trooper received information that the at-fault vehicle was currently at the Larry Six Mile Bar in Huson, Missoula County.

Troopers located the vehicle in the parking lot. Two males were near the vehicle, and one was identified as 71-year-old Charles Hansen. Hansen stated that he had been grocery shopping in Frenchtown prior to going to the bar, and that he did not recall the hit-and-run accident from the 11th. A trooper observed that Hansen was slurring his words, had bloodshot and watery eyes, and was unsteady on his feet.

According to court documents, Hansen stated that he had consumed "a couple of drinks" in Frenchtown and three 7 and 7s since coming to the bar. Prior to this conversation, the bar manager had approached the trooper and told him that Hansen had recently come into the bar intoxicated and demanding to be served alcoholic 7 and 7 beverages, and that she had ultimately placated him by mixing him non-alcoholic versions of the drink.

The trooper determined that Hansen had a valid driver's license, that the vehicle did not have insurance listed, and that the vehicle was still registered to the prior owner. The trooper administered standardized field sobriety tests, and he observed 17/21 indicators of impairment. Hansen agreed to provide a preliminary breath sample, which showed a result of .184. Hansen then refused to provide a breath sample after being read the Montana Implied Consent Advisory. The trooper obtained a warrant, and a blood draw was administered.

According to Hansen’s criminal history report, he had been convicted for a felony level DUI in the Ravalli County District Court of Montana in 2013, and has other impaired driving convictions in the Missoula County Justice Court in 2006, 2001, and 1996. Hansen's license has been suspended for implied consent refusals in 2001, 2006, and 2013.
