Three Montana Ski Hills Crack Top Ten Snow Pack List
Western Montana skiers should be happy, according to the snow-sports enthusiast website SnowBrains.com three of the top ten ski resorts for snow pack are in Montana.
Lost Trail (3rd overall) leads the Montana list with 76", followed by Blacktail Mountain (7th) at 71" and Missoula's Snowbowl (9th) at 69". Nearby Lookout Pass (6th) in Idaho also cracked the top ten. According to snowbrains.com, the Rockies are outperforming Ski hills to the west, "the Pacific Northwest usually dominates this list but this year, they only have one resort in the top 10."
Ray Nickless at the National Weather Service says Snow Pack is definitely above normal in other ways too.
"It is above the median," Nickless said. "We look at the water content in the snow, but that's still a good indication of the overall snowfall in inches that we've gotten also. It looks really good across the Mountains in Montana, the Bitterroot Basin is really doing well.
Though the National Weather Service doesn't measure inches, Nickless says Snotel sites are reporting a lot more water than usual.
"The Natural Resource Conservation Service has a site in the southern Bitterroot up on Saddle Mountain just above Lost Trail Ski Area, and there's currently 18.9 inches of water in that snow pack and on typical years you would be seeing 14.1 inches."
The deep snow pack isn’t limited to the Bitterroot. A snow-tell in the Mission Mountains below Kalispell is reporting 27.8 inches of water, which far above the median amount of 19.4 inches
