This Year’s Average Spring Temperatures in the US Make History As the Warmest on Record
You probably already know that this winter was one of the mildest the US has ever seen. And now it seems the trend of above-average temperatures is continuing.
In fact, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says this spring is the warmest since it began keeping records in 1895.
Between March and May, the average temperature in the US was 57.1 degrees. That’s 5.2 degrees above normal, and it broke a record set in 1910 by a full two degrees.
What’s more, the NOAA reports that June 2011 to May 2012 will go down as the warmest year ever.
Some cities in particular have seen the trend in full-force. From January through May, Chicago, Philadelphia and Washington, DC all saw their highest average temperatures in at least 50 years. And some parts of New York City had temps that haven’t been seen in more than a century.
