Texas Junior College Rejects African Applicants Because of Ebola Fears
Navarro College in Corsicana, Texas is making headlines, but they're not pleasant ones.
The two-year junior college, about 75 miles west of Tyler, was taken to task on Twitter for sending a rejection letter to a Nigerian applicant that reads, "Unfortunately, Navarro College is not accepting international students from countries with confirmed Ebola cases."
The college has since backtracked from those rejection letters. Director of International Programs Elizabeth Pillans, whose signature is on the above rejection letter, released this statement on the school's website:
Our college values its diverse population of international students. This fall we have almost 100 students from Africa. Unfortunately, some students received incorrect information regarding their applications to the institution. As part of our new honor's program, the college restructured the international department to include focused recruitment from certain countries each year. Our focus for 2014-15 is on China and Indonesia. Other countries will be identified and recruitment efforts put in place once we launch our new honors program fall 2015. We apologize for any misinformation that may have been shared with students.
Corsicana is 55 miles from Dallas, where there have now been three confirmed cases of Ebola, including two health care workers. Both were believed to contract the disease after Thomas Eric Duncan died at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas.
So, let's get this straight. The United States has had three confirmed cases of Ebola, two less than an hour away from Corsicana. Are they accepting applicants from Texas? Or the United States?
What are your thoughts?
