Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On May 18, 2025, Jane Doe drove her Nissan Juke, valued at $20,000, to the Mineral County Community Hospital. Doe left her key fob in the car before entering the hospital. 38-year-old Rhonda Hiner left the hospital and took Doe’s vehicle without authorization. Doe reported her vehicle stolen.

A Mineral County Sheriff’s Office deputy pulled over to observe traffic on Interstate 90 and subsequently spotted the Nissan traveling West. The deputy pulled behind Hiner as she traveled in Doe’s Nissan down I-90. Hiner did not respond to the deputy’s use of his emergency lights.

The deputy waited for a period of time and then activated his sirens. Hiner maintained “reasonable speeds”, did not accelerate, and did not attempt to elude through erratic driving. However, she did not yield. Hiner continued eastbound on I-90 towards Missoula County. Mineral County deputies contacted the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office to request assistance.

A MCSO deputy took position in Missoula County to deploy a spike strip against Hiner’s vehicle. The deputy blocked the travel lane of part of the shoulder of I-90 and activated his emergency lights. Upon observing Hiner traveling towards his position, the deputy deployed the spike strip. The spike strip deflated Hiner’s tires, and she came to a stop in the vicinity of Exit 82 of I-90 East.

The deputy observed the Mineral Count deputy attempting to interact with Hiner. He observed that Hiner initially failed to comply with the deputy’s commands. The MCSO deputy made contact with the Nissan, using his push bumper to prevent further flight.

Then the MCSO deputy withdrew his service pistol and commanded Hiner to exit the Nissan. She was then arrested, handcuffed, and taken into custody. Hiner advised that she bought the vehicle for $5,000 cash in Superior. When asked about the location of the keys, Hiner advised that they were in her bra. The deputies released Hiner’s left hand from her cuffs so that she could withdraw the key from her breast area.
