Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - Shortly before 8:30 a.m. on July 4, 2025, a Missoula Police Department officer heard dispatch advise that a male had been stabbed in the face at the Poverello Center. He immediately responded to the location. Upon arrival, the officer observed a white adult male bleeding from his mouth. The male victim, John Doe, was in obvious pain, stating it hurt to talk due to part of the weapon still being inside his mouth.

Doe wanted to provide a statement, but when the officer asked about his pain level, Doe said that on a scale from one to ten, with ten being the worst, his pain was a ten. The officer encouraged Doe to wait until he was transported to the hospital before providing a statement. Medical personnel arrived and transported Doe to Saint Patrick’s Hospital.

An investigation revealed that the suspect was 37-year-old Daniel Osborne. Doe said he saw Osborne attempting to engage with a female in an inappropriate manner, and the female appeared to be trying to get away from him. Doe told Osborne to get away from the female, at which point Osborne began advancing on Doe, who then pushed him. The push escalated to both swinging at one another. Then Doe heard someone say, “Watch out, he has a pen,” immediately before feeling a punch to his face and a sharp object enter the inside of his right cheek.

Later, as the officer was typing her report in a parking lot on Ryman Street, Osborne walked in front of her vehicle. Osborne matched the description of the suspect provided by both the Poverello Center staff and Doe. Another officer was called to assist in taking the suspect into custody.

As the officers approached Osborne, he stated that Doe was charging at him, and he was only defending himself. Osborne was read his Miranda warning and provided a statement afterward. According to court documents, Osborne said he didn’t know Doe but claimed Doe became irate and charged at him for no reason. Osborne explained that he was only defending himself and admitted to stabbing Doe with the pen.
