Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On September 22, 2026, at approximately 9:59 p.m., a Missoula Police Department Officer was stopped at the red light at East Broadway and Madison. The officer observed a white SUV come up from behind his patrol vehicle and drive through the red light in the oncoming lane of travel, nearly causing a collision with another vehicle. The officer activated his emergency lights to conduct a traffic stop.

The white SUV failed to yield and drove through a red light at the intersection of East Broadway and Van Buren. The officer then activated his siren and continued to pursue. The officer noted that there was a prior call to dispatch advising that a white SUV was speeding and may have hit something.

The officer and the suspect SUV approached the Thunderbird Motel. The officer noted that the suspect vehicle was going at speeds in excess of 69 MPH. At one point, the suspect vehicle turned westbound onto Interstate 90 by entering the eastbound lanes of travel, driving the wrong way. Numerous other law enforcement personnel were called to assist in the pursuit and arrived with their emergency lights and sirens activated.

Near Misses: Traffic Chaos on the Interstate

The officer noted there was a decent amount of traffic on the interstate. The suspect vehicle and the officer reached speeds upwards of 100 MPH in a 65 MPH zone. Several officers observed vehicles swerving out of the way to avoid a head-on collision with the suspect vehicle.

The driver of the SUV avoided a stop stick deployed by the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office at the Reserve Street exit and continued driving towards the Airway Boulevard exit.

Then the SUV approached the Wye exit. The SUV turned eastbound in the eastbound lanes, but was met by multiple patrol vehicles that joined in the pursuit. The SUV was successfully stopped.

Numerous officers exited their patrol vehicles with guns drawn to perform a high-risk stop. An officer gave the driver, later identified as 30-year-old Karma Border, numerous commands to open the door and step out of the vehicle. Border refused to comply. Officers were able to get the driver’s side door open and extract Border from the vehicle.
