Skalkaho Road is Muddy, But It’s Open for the Season
The Montana Department of Transportation was removing snow earlier this month from the Skalkaho Road between Hamilton and Philipsburg. At noon Friday, May 24, the gates came down and two-lane partially paved high country road was opened for the summer season. Check the Montana Travelers website for possible weather-related closures.
Tod McKay of the Bitterroot National Forest made the announcement on their webpage, which also has a cool video trip up the road on the Discover Bitterroot National Forest Facebook page. Road crews have told local residents that the late snowmelt has kept Skalkaho Falls from getting into its spring display, but, what the heck, it's Skalkaho Falls! Take a sturdy vehicle up the road southeast of Hamilton, due to the wet, sloppy conditions. Oh, and our usual caution from KLYQ, do not attempt to take your motorhome over Skalkaho. And watch out for forest residents - such as mountain sheep. (see photo below)
