A new campaign is underway to designate the bison as America’s national mammal. The National Bison Legacy Act was recently introduced in the U.S. Senate and, if passed, would put the bison in a position of respect very similar to the Bald Eagle. Senior conservation scientist with the wildlife conservation society, Keith Aune explains why he is pushing for the designation.

The bison is already the state mammal for Oklahoma, Wyoming, and Kansas and bison herds can be found in every state except for Rhode Island. Champions of the act say that the bison is a uniquely American animal that is deeply integrated into U.S. history and culture. Opponents of the act range from those who think America doesn't need a national mammal to those that fear that the designation will lead to over-regulation of the species.
