More Details About the Shooting in Downtown Missoula
Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On April 5, 2026, at 2:19 a.m., multiple officers with the Missoula Police Department responded to downtown following a report of shots fired. Surveillance video shows a male, later identified as 36-year-old Anothony Brodie, standing on the sidewalk near the Ryman Street parking garage chatting with others. A dark vehicle, later determined to be driven by 33-year-old Laurent Mugondozi, begins to turn into the alleyway where Brodie is standing.
Before entering the alleyway, Mugondozi comes to a stop and turns off his vehicle’s lights. Mugondozi then quickly accelerates forward, striking Brodie with his car. According to a third-party witness, Brodie was thrown into an adjacent building and Mugondozi drove into the corner of the parking garage.
After striking Brodie, Mugondozi quickly reverses back into the public street and begins driving forward and away from the scene. As Mugondozi is driving away, Brodie pulls out a firearm, walks after the vehicle, and begins firing rounds into the vehicle. As Brodie was discharging rounds, pedestrians began running into the parking garage to seek protection from the bullets, and one of Brodie’s bullets struck Mugondozi in the leg. The surveillance video establishes that numerous pedestrians are in the immediate area.

The Aftermath: Evidence and Injuries
It was later discovered that Mugondozi’s vehicle had five bullet holes in it. Two holes were located on the vehicle’s rear passenger side, angled from rear to front of the vehicle. Three bullet holes were discovered in the passenger door area.
Shortly after, Mugondozi drove up to the Police Station and gave an officer the bullet that had hit his leg. While the officer applied a tourniquet to Mugondozi’s leg, he noticed the odor of alcohol coming from Mugondozi. The officer also noticed Mugondozi to be slurring his words and swaying, even while seated. Mugondozi was admitted to St. Patrick Hospital, treated, and then discharged.
Mugondozi has provided a statement. While there are inconsistencies within the three different versions of the same statement, he is consistent in admitting to purposely driving into Brodie.
Background of Conflict: A Long-Standing Dispute
Officers found Brodie near the Wells Fargo downtown. Brodie explained that he and Mugondozi began fighting approximately five months ago. Earlier in the evening, Mugondozi and Brodie engaged in a physical altercation near a bar, but separated. Then Brodie went back to his car. Soon afterwards, Brodie decided to return to the area of the fight to see if Mugondozi was still there. Brodie claimed he was not looking for further fighting, but wanted to see if Mugondozi was looking for him because he feared retaliation.
