Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - The process of searching for a new MCPS Superintendent will take another step on Tuesday when the Missoula County Board of Trustees will meet to consider applications from potential candidates.

KGVO News spoke to Tyler Christensen, Public Information Officer with Missoula County Public Schools District One about the process of replacing Dr. Rob Watson who resigned to take another education position in Helena.

The New MCPS Superintendent Search Takes Another Step on Tuesday

“Our board of trustees will have a special board meeting Tuesday starting at 5:00 p.m. where they will begin reviewing the applications put in by the candidates so far,” said Christensen. “That screening process was part of an executive session, which means it will be closed to the public, and then toward the end of that session, they will open it back up to the public again, and identify the superintendent candidates to interview as finalists.”

Christensen laid out the process the Board of Trustees will take in choosing the new superintendent.

The Superintendent Candidates will be Interviewed on February 2

“The trustees will identify the candidates to be interviewed on February 2,” she said. “So those candidates will come in individually on February 2 for those interviews and then at Tuesday night's board meeting, they will set a schedule for each of the candidates to be further interviewed and then talk about what the next steps in the process will be.”

Christensen said the board of trustees explained the expectations of the board and the community toward the new superintendent.

“They just gave a good round-up about what the community told our search firm,” she said. “About what all the good things are about our district and our community; what characteristics or traits or attributes we'd like to see in the new superintendent in order for that person to be successful here in our community, and then also just what the challenges and issues that new superintendent should be aware of as they come into the Missoula community as well.”

Christensen briefly explained the next steps that will be taken by the Board of Trustees.

The Public will have an Opportunity to Meet the Candidates at a Later Date

“Once they've identified those candidates of course we will move quickly to schedule opportunities for community members to meet them and get to know them better,” she said.

In a previous story, KGVO asked about the annual salary and benefits for the new superintendent, but that information was not available at the time of the interview, however, this information was published on the website Salary.com.

‘The average School Superintendent salary in Missoula is $141,626 as of October 27, 2022, but the range typically falls between $115,686 and $170,887. Salary ranges can vary widely depending on many important factors, including education, certifications, additional skills, and the number of years the individual has spent in their profession.’
