Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On March 25, 2025, a Missoula Police Department officer was patrolling near the OneEyed Jacks Casino on S. Reserve. The officer observed a silver Jeep SUV park at the gas pump and enter the building.

A short time later, the driver returned and began leaving the parking lot. The officer observed that the vehicle did not come to a complete stop prior to entering the roadway. The officer initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of Clark and Agnes and found the vehicle was driven by 40-year-old Jami Dawkins.

Dawkins was asked for her license, registration, and proof of insurance. Dawkins advised that the vehicle belonged to her daughter, and she was unsure of the proof of insurance or registration. The officer learned that Dawkins’s license was suspended.

Suspended License Leads to Arrest

The officer informed Dawkins that she was being arrested for having a suspended license and asked her to step out of the vehicle. Dawkins was searched incident to arrest, and within Dawkins’s left pocket, the officer found multiple cigarette butts and loose pieces of property.

Due to the loose items, the officer turned the pocket inside out in his hand. The officer then placed all the items onto the hood of his patrol car. Then the officer observed two small crystal-like shards. From his training and professional law enforcement experience, he noted the shards appeared to look very similar to methamphetamine. The substance was NIK tested and produced a presumptive positive for methamphetamine.

The officer then read Dawkins her Miranda rights, and Dawkins agreed to speak. When informed that the substance from Dawkins’s pocket had tested positive for methamphetamine, Dawkins replied, asking how that could be. Dawkins stated she had not used drugs in a long time. When asked how long that was, Dawkins stated she had not used it for three weeks or since her boyfriend had been taken to jail. The officer was aware that Dawkins’s boyfriend had been arrested only nine days prior.

Claims of Inactivity and Possible Explanations

Dawkins stated she does not use narcotics anymore and “can’t use.” Dawkins then asked the officer if he was positive the methamphetamine was in fact meth and not “kitty litter.” The officer informed Dawkins that companies do not put methamphetamine into kitty litter. Dawkins then informed the officer that it was possible the methamphetamine in her pocket was possibly old meth that had been left in her pocket when she wore her coat last. Dawkins then explained she had not worn her coat recently due to warmer weather.

Dawkins was arrested and transported to jail. She is currently being charged with felony criminal possession of dangerous drugs.
