For the sixth straight week, gas prices have declined nationally. Over this past week, the average price of gas went down in every single state. Patrick DeHaan is the head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy and he says this is uncommon as we head into the prime of summer driving season.

“In Missoula, average prices have dropped from $2.93 a week ago, all the way down to $2.86,” DeHaan said. “That was a fairly nice decline. Prices in Missoula today stand about 14 cents lower than last year. We were at about $2.99 a gallon last year. The national average has also dropped by about five cents a gallon, falling from $2.71 to $2.67 a gallon.”

National average gas prices are 20 cents a gallon lower than a year ago. This decrease in price has been nice, but DeHaan says there are a few things going on right now that could cause a bit of an increase.

“President Trump will be meeting at the G20 summit with the leader of China to discuss trade relations,” DeHaan said. “We will have to watch if there are any developments there. In addition, the market could see oil prices move higher depending on the Federal Reserve decision this afternoon regarding interest rates.”

Gas prices in Missoula are still a few weeks behind the national trend, but DeHaan says prices should continue to go down another three to six cents over the next week or so.
