90-Horses Receiving Care in Montana Cruelty Case
Teams with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals say they'll continue to care for that herd of 90 horses that were seized in an animal cruelty case in Madison County.
It's among the largest animal cruelty cases in Montana in the past decade.
And since the case is just starting through the courts, it remains to be seen whether any of the horses will be taken from the owner and put up for adoption.

One of the largest Montana animal cruelty cases in years
The Madison County Sheriff's Office says it received a court order to seize the horses from a local breeding operation this week, after an investigation in cooperation with the Humane Society of Western Montana.
Authorities say the Morgan horses appeared to be "underweight and suffering from medical conditions, injuries and hoof issues."
Are the Madison County horses being cared for?
The ASPCA was called in to help with daily care and veterinary services while the formal animal cruelty case against the owners goes through the courts. Authorities say two generous donors are helping to provide basic care and hay for the herd.
The agency says it will ensure the horses are taken care of while the case goes through the courts. Since formal charges were just filed in Virginia City, it could be some time before the case is adjudicated and the status of the herd is sorted out.
ASPCA officials say they'll be "leading efforts" to see that the horses receive proper husbandry and medical care. Then, if the ownership of any of the horses transfers to ASPCA, the group will work to organize adoption.
