This is Native American Heritage week throughout Missoula County Public School District One.

Native American Education Specialist for MCPS, Dacia Griego describes some of the activities occurring this week.

“We’re celebrating by bringing in several performers and having some community events,” said Griego. “We’re doing assemblies at five elementary schools and one special event this evening (Wednesday) as we’re having the University of Montana Pacific Islanders Club perform. On Friday, we have former Grizzly and NFL football player Levi Horn who is now a motivational speaker. He will come to Sentinel High School to give a presentation.”

Griego said there will be presentations at several of the MCPS elementary schools this week.

“The UM Pacific Islanders Club will be performing at several elementary school assemblies this week, and we’ve also collaborated with SPARK, and they’re bringing in ‘Supaman’ who will be performing for middle school students.

“Supaman is a Native American fancy dancer and he’s also a rapper, and he’s very popular and very empowering for youth,” she said. “Native American Heritage Week is very important because it’s good to have recognition in the school district and in the community and also for our Native American students to receive that recognition and support as we start the school year.”

The MCPS Indian Education Department’s mission is to Help Native American students achieve academically, culturally, and socially to graduate and become successful lifelong learners.
