On June 22, 2022, a Missoula Police Department officer was dispatched to a local restaurant located in the 1100 block of West Central Avenue for a disturbance. 39-year-old John Mecredy reportedly threatened to shoot the staff and had just fled the area in a vehicle. Police Public Information Officer Lydia Arnold explains.

“Officers were dispatched to speak with an employee who reported Mecredy had ordered some food, but must not have been happy with it because he requested a refund,” Arnold said. “During the interaction, Mecredy escalated and told the employee he was going to return and shoot them. Others in the establishment heard this comment, causing fear and concern.”

Court documents indicate the employee granted Mecredy a refund for his food without issue. However, Mecredy also asked for a refund on his soda as well, which the employee refused. The employee said Mecredy then left the store briefly and returned with a stack of what appeared to be court documents.

Mecredy then threw the paperwork down on the counter and demanded that if the employee did not refund him for the soda he would return to the establishment with a gun and shoot everyone. The employee did not provide Mecredy with a refund and Mecredy left in a vehicle.

“Officers located the vehicle Mecredy was driving and Mecredy was still in the driver’s seat,” Arnold said. “Due to concerns of safety and weapons, the officer asked Mecredy to step out of the vehicle. Mecredy was uncooperative with officers, but officers were able to place Mecredy under arrest for condition of release violation and intimidation.”

The officer spoke with additional employees who were present at the time of the event. Each of these employees stated that they heard Mecredy make the threat to return to the store with a gun to shoot them. Each of them indicated they felt fearful Mecredy would follow through with the threat.

Mecredy is currently being charged with felony intimidation and resisting arrest.
