On April 4th, 2022, at approximately 5:08 a.m., a 911 caller reported hearing several gunshots from a neighbor’s residence in the 700 block of Howell Street. According to the caller, the shots were loud and distinct and were not fireworks.

Missoula Police Department Officers arrived on scene and an unknown adult male came out of an unattached garage closest to the alley and fired a single shot from a firearm. Due to poor lighting conditions, it is unknown which direction the shot was fired.

The male then walked back into the garage. The male was yelling inside the garage and ignoring officer’s commands to come outside. The male then came back outside and was throwing objects, believed to be pottery, at officers. The male exited the garage several times but did not comply with officer’s commands that he was under arrest. The Missoula Police Negotiations team and the Missoula Police SWAT team responded to the scene as well.

Officers contacted neighbors and were able to identify the male suspect as 52-year-old David Guinard. A history check of Guinard showed he is transient, on pre-trial supervision for an open case of assault against a peace officer, and has convictions for assault in Montana.

Guinard has a current warrant out of Missoula Municipal Court for FTA criminal trespass. Court documents indicate Guinard has a history of drug use, mental illness, and currently has access to several rifles, shotguns, and pistols in the residence he was allowed to stay in.

At approximately 1:50 p.m. that same day, Guinard was taken into custody. According to Police Public Information Officer Lydia Arnold, methamphetamine was found on Guinard when he was arrested.

Guinard is currently being charged with criminal endangerment and his case was filed directly to District Court. He is currently being held on $50,000 bond. Guinard’s next scheduled court appearance is bail hearing on April 20, 2022.
