Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On April 24, 2026, a Missoula Police Department officer was dispatched to a reported burglary located in the 1400 block of S. 4th St. W. The complainant is the property manager of the address. He said, “There was a homeless person inside the Airbnb, sleeping on the couch.” He also said the front door was unlocked when he got there. He didn’t know how the unknown male gained access and said no one had rented the house for a week. He said he left the residence as soon as he saw the individual on the couch.

Upon arrival, the officer observed a male sleeping on the couch in the living room. The officer entered the unlocked front door and began walking towards the male. The male woke up, and the officer instructed him to place his hands behind his back. He was later identified as 34-year-old Gregory Mathis.

At this point in time, Mathis was under arrest for Criminal Trespass to Property. The officer observed that Mathis also appeared to be under the influence. Prior to leaving the residence, the officer conducted a search incident to arrest on Mathis’s person.

Located on Mathis were two folded pocketknives and what appeared to be a capped loaded syringe, containing a clear substance. While escorting Mathis outside and to a patrol vehicle, the officer asked Mathis if he was on probation. Mathis stated he was not; however, the officer later learned that he was on probation.

After escorting Mathis to the front of a patrol vehicle, the officer Mirandized Mathis. Mathis invoked, and the officer did not ask him any incriminating questions.

The officer asked another officer to return to the Police Department and utilize the TruNarc Testing Device to determine if the syringe contained any type of dangerous drug. While en route to the Missoula County Detention Facility, the other officer said that the syringe tested presumptive positive for methamphetamine. Mathis was remanded to jail without incident.
