Montana Highway Patrol Arrests Driver For His 5th DUI
Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On February 23, 2025, a Montana Highway Patrol Trooper was driving on US Highway 93 when he observed a silver Dodge pickup weaving within its lane behind him. The trooper also saw the truck driving over the fog line and onto the shoulder. The trooper pulled to the right side of the road, waited for the truck to pass, and then initiated a traffic stop.
The trooper contacted the driver who was later identified as 42-year-old Kasey Richter. According to court documents, Richter’s ten-year-old son was in the backseat of the truck. The trooper could smell the strong odor of alcohol emanating from Richter’s breath. Richter was slurring his words and the trooper observed Richter had red, bloodshot, and watery eyes. When asked to retrieve his driver’s license, Richter handed the trooper two debit cards before handing over his driver’s license.
The trooper had Richter exit the vehicle to perform the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. Richter scored six out of six clues of impairment on the HGN test, five out of eight clues of impairment on the Walk and Turn test, and two out of four clues of impairment on the One Leg Stand test.
Then the trooper read Richter the Preliminary Alcohol Screening Advisory. Richter refused and was arrested for DUI. The trooper read Richter the Implied Consent form and Richter again refused.
The trooper applied for and was granted a search warrant for Richter’s blood. Richter was taken to St. Patrick’s Hospital where the blood draw was taken. Richter was then transported to the Missoula County Detention Facility.
