Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On September 18, 2025, a Missoula Police Department Officer responded to a call from a Montana Probation and Parole Officer. The PO stated she was out with probationer 47-year-old Carl Ray on the Kim Williams Trail, where Ray had built a compound/shelter. The PO was conducting a home search of Ray’s tent when she found suspected methamphetamine, after Ray admitted to using in the preceding days.

Upon his arrival, the MPD officer was provided a bag that contained two crystal-like rocks. Based upon his training and experience, the officer believed the bag to contain methamphetamine.

The officer began speaking with Ray about what had occurred. Ray stated that when he got put on the Intensive Supervision Program (ISP), he got rid of all of his drugs and paraphernalia. Ray advised that he must have missed these two methamphetamine rocks and further stated he should not get charged with them because he did not know that they were there.

Ray Admits to Using Drugs the Day Prior

When asked, Ray stated he had been staying in his camp for about five months. The officer Mirandized Ray, and Ray agreed to speak. Ray stated that if the drugs were his, they were methamphetamine and stated he had used the day prior, but explained he was not in possession of the drug.

The officer spoke with probation, who advised that they had found the drugs next to a marijuana pipe in Ray’s tent. When asked when he last used marijuana, Ray stated it was recent.

The officer noted it is not reasonable to believe Ray did not know the methamphetamine was still in his tent, based on the proximity to the recently used marijuana. Ray was placed under arrest and was transported to the Missoula County Detention Center. He is currently being charged with felony criminal possession of dangerous drugs.
