Medicaid Cuts

A new report says the House Republican budget would leave up to 44 million more low-income people uninsured as the federal government cuts states' Medicaid funding by more than one-third over the next 10 years.

The study was issued Tuesday by two nonpartisan groups, the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Urban Institute.

It looked at the combined impact of repealing President Barack Obama's health care law and converting Medicaid from an open-ended program into a block grant, as called for in the budget passed last month by House Republicans. Under a block grant, states would get a limited sum of money to cover low-income families and frail seniors, as well as disabled people of any age.

The study found the cuts would hit Southern and mountain states the hardest.
