An 18-year-old man accused of attacking a Missoula convenience store clerk with a tire iron has been sentenced to 40 years in prison with 20 years suspended.

John David Stob was sentenced Thursday for robbery, assault with a weapon and tampering.

Prosecutors say he told police he and two friends wanted some cigarettes March 10 and decided to rob a Holiday store on Russell Street because one of the men had robbed it previously.

Stob entered the store and attacked the clerk while the other two men remained outside. The 62-year-old clerk managed to take the tire iron away but was punched in the head and torso.

Stob faced a tampering charge for threatening one of the men police say was involved in the robbery.
