Authorities say a Montana man who owes thousands of dollars in child support and is wanted on felony drug charges has claimed a winning scratch ticket and is now on the loose with $10,000 to spare.

Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry tells KTVM-TV that Robert Stayton recently claimed the winning ticket he bought in Helena, and Montana State Lottery officials did not ask any questions about his background.

The news station reported Wednesday that Stayton has two Flathead County arrest warrants on felony drug charges and owes $65,000 in child support in Washington state and Idaho.

Lottery officials say they are required to check child support records, but only for Montana. They added they are "not statutorily required to check criminal backgrounds" on winners, though they will continue to work with authorities on the matter.
