Later Start Times Mean Most Grizzly Football Games Will Be Under the Lights This Season
The lights around Washington Grizzly Stadium will get a real workout this football season, as later start times will keep the games going into the evening hours.
Sports Information Director Eric Taber said the later afternoon and evening start times all revolve around television.
"Television dictates our kickoff times, and so kickoff times are moved around a bit," Taber said. "That's a good thing, because we get the excitement of a night game and later in the season, a lot of day games will turn into night games by the end of the game. Because of that, we get to have a lot of eyeballs on our games, a lot of people will be able to watch our games all over the country. When I was growing up, kickoff times were either at one o'clock, and then after the time change they started at noon. But, now, we can get so much more TV exposure, we've changed up our kickoff times a bit."
With kickoff times for four games later in the season still to be determined, Taber unveiled the kickoff times to start the season.
"The season starts with a night game against St. Francis on September 3rd, a late summer evening in Missoula, what could possibly be better than that?", he asked. "Then, we're away for two games, Northern Iowa with a 3 p.m. Mountain Time kickoff, then we travel to Cal Poly for a 1 p.m. Mountain Time kickoff, and then we're back home for three straight games, and those are all going to be 2:30 p.m. kickoffs. Southern Utah is Homecoming, Mississippi Valley State and Sacramento State, all kick off at 2:30 p.m."
Taber said the new Griz Vision scoreboard is taking shape..much bigger, wider and louder than the previous scoreboard, and work continues on the Champions Center, adjacent to Washington Grizzly Stadium.
