Your Chance to Unplug and “Plug In” to Books in Missoula
There's really nothing like settling into your favorite chair with a blanket, a beverage, and a book on a cold Montana day.
And this weekend, thousands of people will be looking forward to that after visiting the annual book sale at the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula.
It's the chance to "unplug" from your digital world and re-discover the pleasure of page turning, helping fund museum operations simultaneously.
What is the Fort Missoula Book Sale?
Every year, the staff and volunteers at the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula plan for the Used Book Sale, which traditionally happens on the first weekend in November. The tradition has been going on for decades, except for the interruption caused by the pandemic.
Too many books?
When the book sale returned in November 2022, there were too many books, and it was hard for the volunteers to manage all the donated volumes stacked up during the pandemic.
Those numbers are now more manageable, although donations have been pouring in over the past weeks.
Carolyn Thompson, HMFM assistant director says that means there's something for everyone.
"Nonfiction, fiction, everything is open and we get a lot of folks looking for variety," Thompson explains. "And we really have everything across the board, so please come and visit the sale and take a look at all of your options."
Book bargains to begin with
If you want to get the jump on selection, show up on Thursday, October 31st for the early bird entry, which gives you the first crack at cracking this year's donated volumes for $5. Then, it's free admission for the rest of the weekend, with books priced at $2 per inch. Select collector's volumes are individually priced.
The real bargain hunters show up Sunday for the $10 bag sale.
The same is organized by the Friends of the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula and supports museum operations and programs for the coming year.
