Only Two States Rank Below Montana for AI Search Activity
Artificial intelligence is becoming a bigger part of everyday life across the country. From businesses and schools to personal projects and everyday questions, more Americans are finding ways to use AI. There are also growing discussions about the potential dangers of technology, the precautions people should take, and the benefits it can offer.
Montana’s AI Usage: A Regional Comparison
Montanans apparently aren't jumping on the AI bandwagon as quickly as residents of other states.
Ranking Montana’s AI Search Activity
According to a recent ranking from CrowdReply, Montana is the third-least reliant state on artificial intelligence, placing 48th among all 50 states when ranked from the most to the least AI search activity. CrowdReply analyzed the number of Google searches for different AI chatbots in Montana and every other state each month over the past 12 months.

Only South Dakota and West Virginia reportedly rank lower.
The study looked at AI-related search activity per 100,000 residents, giving researchers a way to compare states of different sizes. According to the numbers, Montana averages 24,515.72 AI-related searches per 100,000 residents.
New York ranks at the opposite end of the list, with the highest reported rate at 52,486.78 for searches per 100,000 residents. California and Georgia also rank among the states with the highest AI search activity.
There are several possible reasons Montana ranks so low on the list. One factor could be internet access, particularly in rural communities where reliable, high-speed connections have historically been harder to come by.
That situation is gradually changing. Services like Starlink and the continued expansion of TDS fiber and Spectrum have helped bring faster internet to more parts of the state. Still, access and connectivity remain challenges in some rural areas.
Factors Influencing Low AI Engagement
It's important to remember that these ranking measures search activity, not necessarily how many people are using AI or how frequently they rely on it. A lower number of searches doesn't automatically mean Montanans aren't using artificial intelligence.

So, is Montana being near the bottom of the AI search ranking a good thing or a bad thing?
That probably depends on who you ask. If you're concerned about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence and the growing role it plays in our lives, perhaps being near the bottom isn't such a bad thing.
Balancing Concerns with Opportunities
On the other hand, AI is becoming an increasingly useful tool for businesses, employees, and individuals looking for ways to save time, find information, and get things done.

Regardless of how you feel about artificial intelligence, it's becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. For now, though, Montana appears to be taking a slower approach than much of the country.
