Missoula County Sheriff’s Office Issues Helpful Warning About iPhones
I have an iPhone and usually, when Apple releases an update I wait a few days before downloading it on my phone. That way, all the kinks and bugs can be discovered and fixed before I have to worry about encountering them on my phone.
This time, I forgot to wait and just downloaded the update right away. And this time, warnings came out about the update, but I didn't see them coming from a tech website. Instead, I saw the warning in a post on the Missoula County Sherriff's Office Facebook page.
They posted a PSA about a new sharing capability that may be automatically turned on after you install the latest update.
Here's what the PSA said:
Now, some people point out in the comments that you would have to press accept or share to actually transfer information, but even so, some people may not want the setting toggled on at all.
Here are the instructions with screenshots for how and where to turn the setting off.
Open your Settings and find the General option:
On the General screen select Airdrop:
On the Airdrop screen, be sure to toggle off the Bringing Devices Together option. In this screenshot, the option is still turned on because it's green.
In this screenshot, you'll know it's turned off because it's grey-colored.
It may not seem like a big deal to have this setting turned on but a story from CBS News Philadelphia points out this may be a concern with children, who could inadvertently share contact information with strangers.
If you want to be certain you're not accidentally sharing your personal information, you may want to turn the setting off.
