Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell Takes on Montana Ice
There are people you expect to see in Montana in the winter. Locals. Transplants who figured it out. Maybe a reclusive celebrity in a beanie.
Chuck Liddell, the former UFC heavyweight champion, going ice fishing in Montana, is somehow surprising and exactly what I would expect from the "ICEMAN."
Yes, that Chuck Liddell. Drilling holes in frozen water and pulling fish up through a tiny hole. No octagon. No crowd. Just cold fingers and patience.
And frankly, that earns a different kind of respect. Especially from a Montana outdoorsman like me.
A Man You Don’t Want Mad At You
I’ve met Chuck Liddell once, under circumstances that made me fairly certain my past life choices were about to catch up with me.
Years ago, on a packed dance floor on California’s Central Coast in San Luis Obispo, my large ass accidentally bumped into his girlfriend. Hard enough to knock her down. I politely reached down to help her up. But, not before the dance floor parted like the Red Sea. Chuck was at the bar, snagging a beverage, and witnessed his girlfriend get hip checked by a dumb guy from MT.
I helped he back to her feet. I turned around, and there he was.
Chuck Liddell.
Up close.
Looking at me.
That’s when you start doing very fast mental math. How far is the exit? Does apologizing louder help? Is this how it ends?
Fortunately, it concluded with an apology, a chuckle, and me walking away feeling very mortal. Funny in hindsight. Slightly terrifying in real time.
From the Octagon to the Ice
That memory is part of why seeing Liddell ice fishing in Montana feels different. Here is a man who once made a living rendering opponents unconscious, now calmly sitting on a frozen lakejigging a tiny fishing rod.
You don’t have to hype up the trip. Cold weather. Ice. Fish. The basics. Anyone who’s done it knows ice fishing isn’t glamorous. It’s quiet. It’s uncomfortable. And it only rewards you if you respect the process. Shout to the "Iceman" for braving the Montana winter.
