[/captionBILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — A coroner's inquest into a fatal shooting involving Red Lodge's assistant police chief has been scheduled for May 24.

The Billings Gazette reports that Park County Coroner Al Jenkins will preside over the hearing in Carbon County District Court. It is scheduled to last one or two days.

Thirty-five-year-old Timothy Patrick was killed in an Oct. 13 shooting along the Beartooth Highway south of Red Lodge. Patrick and a woman, Leslie Ann Erickson, were walking along the highway near a stolen car when they were confronted by assistant police chief Scott Cope.

Several shots were fired, and Patrick was declared dead at the scene.

The shooting was investigated by the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation, which has released few details.
