Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - Missoula Public Health, in cooperation with Home Resource, will be hosting what is being termed the ‘Last Best Haz Mat Waste Days’ next week.

I spoke with Environmental Health Manager Elena Evans about the upcoming final Haz Mat Disposal Days event.

The Last Best Haz Mat Waste Days Event Will be September 6 and 7

“There's a lot of this stuff that's just sitting around in garages and basements and things like that, so we are excited to be hosting the Last Best Haz Waste days on September sixth and seventh," began Evans."We encourage people to register online at home resource.org/hcd.”

Haz Mat Waste Days have been held on a regular basis over the past several years, and the final edition will be on September sixth and seventh.

“Household hazardous waste days have been held pretty regularly and that's about once a year, generally, in September, since the 1990’s,” she said. “There was originally some grant funding to assist with that, to just kind of ensure more safety of our community, and then also for what ultimately was ending up in the landfill and could then impact our sole source aquifer.”

The New Drop-Off Facility is Located at Home Resource at 1515 Wyoming

A new drop off facility has been created at Home Resource at 1515 Wyoming Street, but Evens said the Last Best event will help to highlight the new location for disposal of hazardous waste in Missoula.

“We have always wanted to meet the needs of the community,” she said. “There were a few years when we did not have a Haz Mat Waste Days event because we felt as though we were so close to opening the year round facility. However, it has been a few years, and therefore we are having the Last Best Haz Waste Days to hopefully get folks to really look in their basements, look in their garages, and clear all that stuff out so that it's the backlog is hopefully kind of diminished now, at the end of this Last Best Hazardous Waste Days.”

Evans also wanted Missoulians to know that Home Resource now houses the permanent hazardous waste disposal facility.

You Must Register Online to Drop Off Your Hazardous Waste Materials

“We're excited to partner with Home Resource to have a year round household chemical disposal center co-located at Home Resource,” she said. “We're currently open Tuesdays and Thursdays, and are taking appointments. We found that people really like appointments because then there's no waiting in lines, and we tried that at the last Haz Waste Days and we didn't have lines backing up all the way over the Scott Street Bridge.”

Those interested in dropping off hazardous materials around the house can contact the facility here.
