The usual warnings for drivers about kids on the streets around schools are never to be taken lightly. And those reminders to be aware of pedestrians and bike riders, no matter the age, extend to all streets and roads.

As a way to publicize that message, May 4 is "Bike and Walk to School Day" and Bike Walk Bitterroot has organized a group in Hamilton. Wednesday morning, May 4 at 7:30 a.m., a group of walkers and bikers - both kids and adults - will be making the journey from the St. Francis Catholic Church on South 5th Street to the Daly Elementary School.

The group will be traveling along Hamilton's residential streets, but will also be making their way across US 93 on their route, so motorists need to be aware and use the demonstration as a reminder to be careful behind the wheel.

By the way, May the 4th is also similar to the movie phrase "May the Force" be with you, from Star Wars films. It has been known as Star Wars Day for a number of years now, and members of the walking-biking group are encouraged to wear some Star Wars-attire to acknowledge the day.

National Bike Month activities in the Bitterroot Valley.

There are more activities planned for May's National Bike Month in the valley. Bike Walk Bitterroot will start the "Walk and Roll Challenge" May 10 through the end of the month, where you are encouraged to travel the most miles by bike, foot, board, or any other non-motorized form of transportation on a "regular" basis. Miles racked up in other competitions won't count. Just things like commuting to work, "running" an errand, or strolling through one of our parks will count. There will be weekly prizes. Register at the Bike Walk Bitterroot website.

A Commuter Breakfast is planned May 20 at the Hamilton Parklet (which is at 107 South 2nd Street this summer). Free coffee and food from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.

The Hamilton Police Department "Bike Rodeo" for the kids will be May 21. More details are coming for that popular annual event from the Hamilton police.

And "Sunday Street" will be happening on South 4th Street in Hamilton from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on May 22nd. The group "Poor Henry" will bring the music. More details are at the Bike Walk website.
