University of Montana supporters pulled off a rare win against the Montana State Bobcats in the annual ‘Can the Cats’ competition to raise funds and food for food banks across the state.

The Griz win this year with 671,000 pounds of food and funds raised as compared to Montana State’s 403,000 pounds.

UM Sports Information Director Eric Taber provides details.

“We picked up the win and we didn't have to play a sport, but it's still a win,” said Taber. “We'll celebrate nonetheless, that in the annual ‘Can the Cats’ food drive Montana comes out on top this season, and in this pandemic stricken year, that's really exciting news, not just for the Missoula community, but for the entire Montana community.”

Taber provided the impressive record numbers collected by both schools for local food banks.

“These are massive, massive numbers so a total of 1,074,000 pounds of food and money combined has been raised for both Missoula and Bozeman,” he said. “So the Griz win this year with 671,000 pounds of food and funds raised as compared to Montana State’s 403,000 pounds.”

Taber emphasized that the food and cash donations stay in the local communities.

“The donations and the food raise stayed local for each of those communities,” he said. “So it really is something that benefits the whole state. We can't play football this year but all of us in athletics this year are really proud of the fact that we're able to do things like this for the entire state.”
