Gay Ex-Professor Sues Montana State University Over Firing

A former assistant professor has filed a lawsuit against Montana State University, saying he was denied tenure and fired because he is gay.

David Agruss filed the lawsuit Thursday in Gallatin County District Court.

The Bozeman Daily Chronicle reports that Agruss taught English at MSU from 2008 to 2015.

His lawsuit contends that he was "subject to homophobic discrimination, retaliation and breach of contract."

MSU spokesman Tracy Ellig said Friday that the university had not seen the filing and does not comment on pending litigation.

The Human Rights Bureau investigated his charge of discrimination and retaliation and in January 2014 found "no cause" for his case.

The lawsuit asks for a jury trial and unspecified damages.
