Gabrielle Giffords Vows to Return to Congress in New Memoir
In a new book, ‘Gabby: A Story of Courage and Hope,’ Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and her astronaut husband Mark Kelly detail the intensive therapy and psychological struggles the Arizona Democrat has endured after surviving an attempt on her life early this year. After all of the struggles and hardships, however, Giffords declares that she will indeed return to Congress.
Although Kelly authored most of the book, Giffords herself is said to have penned the last few pages, in which she wrote, “I will get stronger. I will return.”
Since the January shooting during a meet and greet outside a grocery store in Tuscon, Giffords has relearned how to walk and talk, and coped with the emotional toll of learning six people were killed in the attack — something she was not told about until more than two months later.
Kelly recounts the harrowing ordeal of hearing erroneous media reports immediately after the tragedy that said his wife had died in the shooting, and he also talks about Sarah Palin’s now-infamous election map crosshairs, saying he expected an apology from the former Alaska governor that never came.
While there were many dark moments during Giffords’ recovery, one particularly amusing story is revealed: when her memory was tested, she responded to a picture of Arnold Schwarzenegger with the phrase “Messin’ around. Babies,” showing she had full recollection of the former California governor’s extra-marital affair.
The book also reveals Giffords, 41, had been undergoing fertility treatments before the shooting and hoped that she and Kelly might have a child sometime this year.
