HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Authorities say a man on the run for crimes committed near Helena has been hospitalized after stabbing himself as officers closed in on him in Mexico.

The Helena Independent Record reports (http://bit.ly/1MvEUyq ) Lewis and Clark County Attorney Leo Gallagher says Thomas Emil Sliwinski was arrested Thursday in Tijuana, Mexico. He was convicted of having sex with a young girl in 2003.

Gallagher says the 62-year-old Sliwinski will probably be turned over San Diego officials after treatment for his stab wounds. From there, he would face an extradition hearing before he can be sent to Montana.

In addition to the child rape conviction, Sliwinski's ex-wife says he was polygamist who had sex with her and her younger sister before they turned 16.

Sliwinski fled after he was kicked out of his sex offender treatment program.
