Forest Service Cancels Bass Creek Spring Burning Plan
Bitterroot National Forest officials had closed the Larry Creek trails and the horse trailer parking area at Bass Creek this spring because a 250-acre prescribed fire had been planned. That burn will not happen. The trails are now open and the entire area of the Charles Waters Campground and parking areas are available. The weather caused cancellation of the project, according to Tod McKay of the forest. The recent rain was the final factor to not burn the undergrowth, which was partially funded by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation to improve winter big game forage.
Though the Bass Creek area is open, services such as water and trash collection are not available. So, take your own water and for your trash - "Pack it in, Pack it out." Water and garbage service, along with camping fees, will start May 10th. The burn might occur this fall or next spring - weather permitting.
