Over the last few weeks, many Montanans have complained that the FBI is trying to extort money from them by threatening to lock up their computers because of illegal digital activity.

Public Affairs Specialist for the FBI Salt Lake City Division Debbie Bertram says recipients of these messages should "just hang up the phone or delete the e-mail. Do not send the $200 payment that the individual is saying is required to unlock the computer."

FBI Public Affairs specialist Debbie Bertram:

Bertram says that the message "is a scam and the FBI wants to make sure that the people of Montana realize that this is nothing more than a con-artist trying to get money out of people."

According to Bertam, reports of the scam have been made at multiple FBI locations in the state and FBI supervisors issued the public warning after a few individuals lost money to the scam.
