Study: Facebook Users Access Site Through Smartphones More Than Computers
Some of the world’s smallest computers now make up a big part of Facebook’s traffic.
The social networking giant gets the bulk of its traffic from smartphone devices such as iPhones and Androids, according to a new report compiled by comScore.
Its annual “Mobile Metrix” report found that for the month of March, Facebook users spent the majority of their time accessing their walls and messages on their cell phones. These phone users also spent an average of 441 minutes on their Facebook pages. Computer users only spent an average of 391 minutes on Facebook.
Facebook was also the winner in the battle for overall access to social networks, beating Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Foursquare. The latest numbers made Facebook the second most successful mobile company, trailing only Google.
Wired suggests that these numbers could give Facebook the perfect motivation to develop a cellular device of its own. Facebook hasn’t made any official announcements about such a suggestion that the company secretly has one in the works. Besides, despite these numbers, it has struggled in recent years to even develop a unique app for its service, so developing its own phone may come later than even the company could expect.
