Education Officials Threaten To Curb Montana Funding

Federal education officials are warning that Montana must get in line with its No Child Left Behind benchmarks or risk losing some of its funding.

The warning by the U.S. Department of Education says the state has until Aug. 15 to comply with the requirements to determine adequate yearly progress for the 2010-2011 school year.

In April, Montana education superintendent Denise Juneau requested a waiver from complying with the annual measurable objectives. She says it's unfair for schools to have to adhere to an outdated, broken education program left over from the Bush administration while the Obama administration is creating its own priorities.

Juneau said Friday she wants to know which programs would be hurt and to what degree before deciding whether to comply with the Aug. 15 deadline.
