The Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center has issued an avalanche warning for the backcountry of the Bridger Range and the Northern Gallatin Range in southwestern Montana.

Center officials said Sunday that more than 20 inches of snow has fallen over the last several days on an unstable snowpack.

Additional stress on the snowpack has been caused by strong winds from the west-northwest.

The center says the avalanche danger is high and travel is not recommended in the area.

The warning lasted until this morning.

A man and a woman were injured Saturday after being swept over a cliff in an avalanche while skiing out of bounds at Bridger Bowl.

Authorities say the woman suffered a significant leg injury while the man suffered minor injuries.
