The Bonneville Power Administration is proposing an electric power deal for the shuttered Columbia Falls Aluminum Plant.

BPA spokesman Mike Hansen says that CFAC has expressed interest in the 4½-year deal, but has not committed to anything. If approved, the power deal would begin on April 1, 2012.

The aluminum plant has been closed since October 2009 as a result of the high cost of power and increased international competition.

Under the proposal, BPA would provide an average of 140 megawatts, enough power to operate two of the smelter's five potlines.

Reopening CFAC would bring a significant boost to employment in the Flathead Valley.
