Bones Found in Glacier Those of Missing Hiker

WEST GLACIER, Mont. (AP) — The National Park Service says bone fragments found in Glacier National Park last summer were those of a Kentucky seminary student who disappeared during a planned 100-mile hike in August 2008.

The National Missing Person's Program at the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification determined the bone fragments belonged to 27-year-old Yi-Jien Hwa of Lexington, Ky.

Last July, a hiker found fabric matching Hwa's clothing description in an area below the steep cliffs above Avalanche Lake, which was on Hwa's intended route. Rangers who investigated found the bone fragments and evidence that closely matched items on Hwa's equipment list.

Park officials say Hwa's family has been notified.

Park spokeswoman Denise Germann said Hwa's cause of death could not be determined.
