Bitterroot Forest Fire Danger is ‘High’

With hot, dry weather predicted for the next week, along with a possibility of afternoon thunderstorms, the Bitterroot National Forest has moved the fire danger to "High." Anna Bateson of the Bitterroot Forest suggested some camping tips:

  • Pack a shovel and bucket to help put out your campfires.
  • Keep your campfires small and PUT THEM OUT. Coals should be cool to the touch.
  • Never leave a campfire unattended.
  • People who smoke should only light up in cleared areas.
  • Drivers should stay on established roads and trails. Dry grass and brush can ignite easily.
  • Firewood cutters should try to finish up before the hot afternoons.

    • There are no restrictions on the Bitterroot National Forest yet, but fires will start more easily and will spread more rapidly as the dry conditions build. If you see smoke where it shouldn't be, call authorities.
