Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - Thursday, August 15 will be the first day Montanans will be able to apply for their 2023 Montana Property Tax Rebates.

I spoke this week with Jason Slead, Communications Director with the Montana Department of Revenue, to get a primer on how Montanans can successfully navigate the process of applying for and receiving their final property tax rebate. He first directed readers to a special website.

August 15 is the First Day to Apply for your Property Tax Rebate

“Everything that you need to know on this to get things rolling is on the website ‘get my rebate.mt.gov’, and we have put everything there that you need,” began Slead. “We have all the qualifications that you might be wondering about. We have all of the history about how we got here, and we have different checklists that you can look through. You can look at what kind of postcards we've been sending out.”

Slead acknowledged the difficulties that taxpayers experienced last year.

“We've learned a lot since the last time we ran them,” he said. “It was the first time running it, and we were still putting everything in place. We wanted to see how it stood up, and we learned some things. I mean, just like anything else, when you started from the ground up, you learn things along the way. So, we dusted ourselves off, and now we're doing it for a second year. And one thing that we know is that our public, the citizens of Montana, will also have more information because they did it last year.”

Slead Started with the Basic Information You'll Need to Apply

Slead started with the basics.

“You're going need your names and social security numbers of you and your spouse and your dependents,” he began. “You're going to need to know your geocode of your principal residence of 2023 and you can find that on Montana cadastral and cadastral.mt.gov. It’s also going to be on your property tax bill. Also, you're going to want to know the amount of property taxes you paid, as reflected on your 2023 principal residence property tax bill. And then you also want to know your mailing address, where you want your rebate to be sent.”

Slead explained why the Department of Revenue will be sending checks through the mail, instead of using direct deposit for these property tax rebates.

There will be no Direct Deposit this Year; They will Send a Check

“What we found out from last year was that we have some fraudsters who are trying to take advantage of people, so direct deposit was an area of concern, and we don't want to deal with fraudsters. That’s why we have chosen to mail you your rebate.”

If you run into trouble, you can call the Montana Department of Revenue's call center number at 406-444-6900, starting August 15.

Once again, it’s important to know that the first day to apply for your property tax rebate will be August 15.
