KALISPELL, Mont. (AP) — The trial for an Evergreen man accused of deliberate homicide in the death of his girlfriend's 2-year-old son has been set for March 14.

The Flathead Beacon reports that Brandon Lee Walter Newberry appeared in Flathead County District Court Thursday for a status conference. His trial had originally been scheduled for September, but lawyers on both sides requested more time to prepare.

Newberry has pleaded not guilty to the charges stemming from the February death of Forrest Groshelle. According to court records, Forrest died of laceration of the small intestine after being hit multiple times in the stomach.

The boy's mother told deputies that Newberry had been watching Forrest while she worked.
