1902 — John McGraw started his 30-year tenure as manager of the New York Giants. (More info.)

1921 — Jack Dempsey knocked out George Carpentier in the fourth round of their fight in Jersey City, NJ to retain the heavyweight boxing title. It was the first boxing event to take in at least $1 million ($1.6 million) at the gate. (More info.)

1938 — Helen Wills Moody won a then-record eighth Wimbledon women’s singles title by defeating Helen Jacobs. (More info.)

1963 — San Francisco Giants’ pitcher Juan Marichal out-dueled Milwaukee Braves’ ace Warren Spahn, 1-0 in 16 innings. (More info.)

1972 — American Bob Seagren pole vaulted a world record 5.63 meters in Fresno, CA. (More info.)

1977 —  Swede Bjorn Borg defeated American Jimmy Connors in the men’s singles final at Wimbledon.  (More info.)

1986 — Boston Red Sox pitcher Roger Clemens suffered his first loss of year after winning his first 14 decisions.  (More info.)

1988 — On her way to a Grand Slam, Steffi Graf defeated Martina Navratilova to win the women’s singles title at Wimbledon and break Navratilova’s six-year winning streak.  (More info.)
