Montana Secretary of State Linda McCulloch is asking for the Montana Legislature to change the way the state fills vacancies when a U.S. Senator representing Montana leaves office before a term ends. Right now, such a vacancy would be filled by a gubernatorial appointment.
On Monday, Montana Political Practices Commissioner Jonathan Motl dismissed an allegation from Montana State Senator Jeff Essman. Essman had claimed that Secretary of State Linda McCulloch had improperly used her office and staff to support a voter registration initiative that was on the ballot.
