Ravalli County Sheriff Chris Hoffman announced on Tuesday afternoon, that the active search in the mountains near Stevensville for George Alex Baumann has been officially suspended.

Hoffman said Baumann, 56, a Stevensville resident was first reported missing on August 27 when he was going to gather firewood in the Ambrose Creek area.

"Even though the search has been suspended, that doesn't mean we don't continue to look for him," Hoffman said. "At this point it's turned into a search for a missing person."

Hoffman said search and rescue teams from several agencies descended on the Ambrose Creek area over the labor Day weekend, with several dog teams scouring the area.

"All told, the amount of mileage the dog teams put on was roughly 90 miles inside of a three-quarter mile square," Hoffman said. "That search extended out nearly two miles into all the drive-able roads in that area, it's quite a road system up there. Again, we didn't find any indication of Mr. Baumann's whereabouts."

Hoffman continues to ask anyone who may have information as to the whereabouts of George Alex Baumann to contact the Ravalli County Sheriff's Office at 363-3033.
