Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks are contemplating whether or not changes need to be made when it comes to river recreation on the West Fork and Upper Bitterroot. FWP Spokeswoman Vivaca Crowser says lots of folks are reporting that the river is getting busier.

“There was a committee that worked on the issue,” said Crowser. “There has been some research done in particular to gain a better understanding of river users experience and the amount of use on these stretches of river. Then this summer, the citizen committee made a recommendation to the Fish and Wildlife Commission on some rules that they were recommending be put in place.”

According to Crowser, one proposed rule change involves when folks are allowed to float on the river.

“There would be a no floating day, either commercial or private recreation, which would be Fridays from Painted Rocks Dam to the Applebury Forest Service Site,” Crowser said. “That portion of the West Fork, there would be a day where you could go and walk in as an angler and not see anyone walking by.”

Crowser says all the specifics of the proposals can be seen on the FWP website and that the public comment period will continue to be open through the 13th of October.
