See Best-Selling Missoula Author at Upcoming Event

The Missoula Public Library is always doing a great job of bringing together authors and readers with some great opportunities to move "beyond the book."

But this fall, the schedule has been especially remarkable.

Last month, fans got a rare treat to hear in person from noted Montana writer David Quammen, sharing his latest work The Heartbeat of the Wild. David has been one of the most well-known writers on nature and research ever since the early days of Outdoor magazine.

Now, the library is presenting a most unexpected collaboration, with a chance to hear from two of Missoula's biggest celebrities of the past decade.

On November 19th, New York Times bestselling author Stephanie Land will appear at the library to discuss her latest work, Class: A Memoir of Motherhood, Hunger and Higher Education. The highly anticipated volume will be released Tuesday and is the follow-up to her moving 2019 best-seller Maid, which told of her story as a single mom, fighting to support her and her daughter in Washington re-build her life, and pursue her dream to study writing at the University of Montana. The series became the basis for a Netflix adaptation of the story.

A new book with deeper questions

Now, in Class, Land expands on the story with what's described as "an intimate and heartbreaking portrait of motherhood", especially achieving a balance with "personal desires and professional ambition." it also explores questions like who has the "right" to create art and go to college, and how our culture values work.

Not only is the appearance a rare chance to hear from Stephanie, but she's teamed up with one of the more colorful personalities in town, and all over the Internet, vlogger, writer, and Internet personality Hank Green, who will moderate the discussion.

Green has been working in a lot of different directions himself this year, even writing a standup comedy routine about his fight against cancer, which has been showcased at the Roxy Theater.

Following the program, which lasts from 7 to 9 p.m. Land will also be signing copies of her books.

If you'd like to attend, the library asks that you use the main entrance as the program is an "after-hours" event, and the other entrances will be locked.
